For any born and bred Melbournian, including myself, it’s unheard of. Well, that is until this year. It marks the first time in 13 years that I’ll be missing the races. No Derby Day, no Stakes Day, no dresses – whatsoever.
And I must admit: a little part of me is relieved.
Sure I’m getting pangs of jealousy as I write, but in all seriousness, going to the races is no mean feat. This coming from a severely addicted internet shopper who dedicates months of research into a single outfit – let alone three or four.
It hasn’t stopped me looking for outfits either. I’ve been browsing ‘options’ for ‘next year’, just in case. I always tend to start with the dress, then work in the shoes and accessories from there. From experience, it’s far easier to match a fascinator to a dress than find a dress to match a fascinator. Plus, having the dress is the perfect excuse to get your headpiece made.
Not that it really matters by the end of the day. I’ll never forget at one Cox Plate, as my sister and I stumbled obnoxiously behind two older women, carrying on with our overflowing champagne glasses, we overheard one of them say (loudly) to the other, “It’s elegant now, but wait ’til later”. And how true that statement was – and still is.
By 7pm in the Nursery carpark at Flemington, the races are anything but elegant …
Crowds chant as vodka is sculled straight from the bottle. Grown men carry other (slightly more intoxicated) grown men on their shoulders. Phantom friends turn up in tears or sprawled in garden beds, while once respectable ladies pick immaculately groomed roses for fun on their way out … or maybe that’s just me.
Yes, it’s safe to say I’ll be celebrating my break from all the racing action this year.
But hypothetically, if I was going, I’d be wearing these drool-worthy combinations.
Derby Day: Arrogant Cat beret from ASOS, Alexander Wang dress, Deux Lux clutch, Barneys T-strap sandal from Barney’s Warehouse (huge discounts plus shipping to Oz is only around $40).
Melbourne Cup Day: ASOS Jewel Hair Crown, Yeojin Bae Tilda dress (exclusive to MYER Melbourne City and Sydney City starting this week, 28th October 2013!), Barneys T-strap sandal, Klear Klutch pink transparent clutch.
Stakes Day: ASOS flower crown, AQ AQ Gritz dress, Deux Lux clutch, ASOS FLO Leather sandals.
In fact, I’ve already bought the Deux Lux clutch. For $29USD, it’s divine (and comes in burgundy too).
